Hexagon, the Neutral High-End Bass   taken from Hobby HiFi 4/2001

Hexagon The 55 x 60 x 52 cm (HxWxD) sized, hexagonal subwoofer shown here, comes with 2 drivers and 2 passive radiators. This subwoofer is a development by Bernd Timmermanns and featured in Hobby HiFi 4/2001.

The front panel shows the IR receiver, the amplifier is on the opposite side. On the left side and the side opposite are the two drivers, while the two passive radiators are on the right side and on the side opposite.

Due to the fact that the two drivers are on opposite sides, the unwanted cabinet vibration could be reduced to below 1/10. Radiation and sound output remains the same as with any subwoofer of this size with two drivers.

Building instruction - Bass Hexagon (2 x 40 litre cabinet volume)

The building instruction is to found in HiFi 4/2001 or comes with out kit. You will find out that it isn't that difficult to build this complex looking subwoofer. The horizontal top and bottom panels as well as the vertical, internal bracing panels are the foundation.

It's obvious that the BassExciter isn't an expert in extreme low bass. Sound quality, precision and clean bass without any slack and boominess are the Hexagon's forte.

    the sound

The use of passive radiators, pulse correction and the strong magnet of this conservatively designed BassExciters, the bass produced is deep and precise as well as neutral and unobtrusive.

The driver: BassExciter® by Ralph Mantel

The BassExciter produces an astonishingly deep and clean bass, even in a small 17 litre cabinet. This goal was achieved by developing the BX 10 and the passive radiator BXP 10 (available since 8/2000).

    The amplifier module

As amplifier we chose the Detonation Det 110 MK II; this amplifier is solidly built, powerful and my be connected to any hi-fi or home cinema system known to us.

    - volume,
    - crossover frequency,
    - phase from 0 to 180 degrees

Below (1) the lower terminals for connection to your home cinema unit or pre-amp.

To the right from there (5)
    - bass (at about 28 Hz) may be increased by 3 or 6 dB,
    - the internal crossover may be bridged (standard is "off")
    - the amplifier may be switched off or on or you leave it up to the amplifier (auto).

Below are 4 input terminals(2) for connection to the loudspeaker output terminals of your amp; to the right 4 output terminals (3) to release your loudspeakers from bass (this only works if the terminals (2) are connected to your main amp).

and finally (6) - the mains cable.
