Loudspeakers for your home cinema

Home cinema should project the sound of movies realistically. For surround sound, 5.1 or more speakers are needed (refer to Basics to the right).

For the front 3 identical floorstanding would be ideal, but that doesn't work usually since the screen is in the way. Therefore, the centre speaker is placed horizontally (acoustically better would be a floorstanding speaker or even two of them, left and right of the screen).

The rear speakers are responsible for effects. Therefore, these speakers may sound slightly different than the front speakers.

Alcone by RCM

Alcone/Vifa Pascal XT Alcone (by RCM) stands for Aluminium Cone. These drivers are known for their rigid cones, and yet they show only a moderate resonance. The following combinations are something to look forward to:

The magazine Hobby HiFi

This publication features loudspeaker kits, indispensable information for the DIY community. Reasonably priced home cinema sets are: Topas aus Hobby HiFi Sonderheft 1

First class loudspeakers suitable for jazz and classical music as well:

The magazine Klang+Ton

This loudspeaker DIY publication has a longstanding tradition. For many decades CT 209 aus Klang+Ton 5/2004 top-quality kits have been featured and off course the extremely popular Cheap Tricks (CT). Especially in this section you'll find many interesting contenders:

Jim Thiel - big cinema with absolute top soundtrack

Jim Thiel - Koinzidenzchassis Jim Thiel in the USA manufactures the high-end loudspeakers carrying his name. For his finished loudspeakers he is using a driver that surpasses all other drivers we know. This driver, called coincidentally mounted driver (coincident source array), is a special type of Cumulus, Bauvorschlag aus Hobby HiFi 5/2004 coax driver (where tweeter and midrange driver are mounted behind one another on the same horizontal axis). Jim Thiel goes one step further: he mounts tweeter and midrange not only on the same horizontal but also on the same vertical axis. This design produces a sound with a quality never heard before. Hobby HiFi suggests loudspeaker designs incorporating this driver like e.g. the Cumulus (picture left) setting new standards regarding sound homogeneity. Cumulus compares well with finished loudspeakers setting you back a five digit Euro amount (indicated by Hobby HiFi). There is now a Cumulus family of loudspeaker kits available for home cinema.
