Hard Choice
Frequency response, power handling, impedance - ...there are too many terms and specifications. We often forget about the most important aspect of sound reproduction: the sound itself. 20 years ago I looked first for the frequency response of a speaker driver. Today I know better.

Nowadays, we determine by means of calculations and tests which speaker is suitable for which application. We invite you to use this service. Tell us what you want and we will suggest a choice of loudspeakers. We even adapt our kits to your specific room conditions, something you won't get from a finished product supplier. EX3 - klein, aber super in den Mitten

Which loudspeaker is the best for me?

First, you need to think about what the most important criteria are for your loudspeaker:

Sound Quality

If you want a small High-End speaker with an impressive bass even at small volume: The IT EX2 MAG and the even smaller EX3 MAG (picture above right) . Pascal XT Dirac

Excellent imaging and sound quality

... Is provided by the Pascal XT (picture left).

This top class speaker was developed jointly by Gerd Lommersum and Peter Strassacker. The Pascal XT doesn't have to fear competitive products from ScanSpeak or Seas Excel.

This speaker surely belongs to the best available products in the medium price segment regarding clean and tight bass, high fidelity and imaging. The Pascal XT clearly outperforms even some speakers in higher price segments (please see review in Hobby Hifi 1/2004).

The smaller Alcone Dirac (picture right) and the Alcone Dirac XT (reviewed in Klang and Ton 4/2004) also show excellent imaging. Additionally, both are shielded and are therefore suited for home cinema.

Excellent detail and imaging (especially for jazz, classic)

Jim Thiel - Koinzidenzchassis Cumulus The Cumulus is setting a new standard regarding homogeneity of sound. The incorporated midrange driver and tweeter are not only positioned along one axis (coax driver) but also share the same voice coil and magnet (coincident driver or coincident source array, picture right). As a consequence the Cumulus achieves a never seen before attention to detail and imaging. Hobby HiFi compares this speaker with finished speakers costing 10.000 EUR and more.

One Point Monitor

If you want it as shelf speaker, choose One Point Monitor

For absolute best tops (like electrotats) many of our customers prefer a bipolar driver or Air Motion Transformer (AMT). This tweeter you'll find in High-End-Workshop Duetta or - a bit slimmer - the High-End-Workshop Duetta Top. Or for high demands in tops and mids, with probably the best dome tweeter on the market, the ScanSpeak D2904-980000: the Studio 12.

temperance
Absolutely outstanding, if the bass is important: Temperance.

Universal speakers

VOX 253 Topas Very popular, as an excellent universal, floorstanding speaker, is the Visaton VOX 253 HE,a slim an elegant speaker (picture left). The improved Visaton VOX 253 MTI (equipped with magnetostat and titan midrange driver) is also available with a larger midrange (same as VOX 253 HE) as kit VOX 253 MHT Even more bass is provided by the VOX 300 with a 36 cm bass driver mounted on the side.

Excellent in Design and in sound reproduction are: Visaton Noblesse and Visaton Casablanca III which we like more than Casablanca IV with titan mids and tweeter.

The Visaton VOX 200 is a little slimmer, even slimmer the Topas, which we carry in 5 variations (picture right).

Excellent movers are the Alcone RCM kits with drivers that feature an aluminium cone, like Alcone Laplace, Lagrange and Fourier Due to their quality these speakers are highly praised and ideally suited as home cinema additions.

Just as interesting is the Quintadena 1, a speaker with a high power capability and well balanced tops.

Home cinema systems

Lagrange XT
XT 300
Well suited for home cinema are Alcone drivers, since the smaller types are all magnetically shielded. The Dirac (above right, near page begin), but also the Lagrange as floorstanding front, rear or satellite speaker are very popular or the Laplace are very popular.

Gerd Lommersum, a very talented speaker designer developed the Lagrange XT Sat (picture left). This speaker includes the Vifa XT300 KS/4 ring radiator (picture below) and was - in conjunction with the Sub 28 subwoofer - hailed by Klang+Ton 1/2004 as "ideal trio".

In 2003 Dr Joseph D'Appolito held a lecture to industry delegates on how to develop a home cinema reference system. The Alcone Reference System was used as an example.

Sub 12 Sub 22 The unbeaten, perfect addition is the Sub 12 (picture left) if the "cube" is not allowed to be much bigger

... or - at twice the size - the Sub 22-400 (picture right) with 400/700 Watt (continuos/programme), if it's not only low bass you are after but still want to have something up your sleeves.

This subwoofer is of course available with 300 Watt (continuous) as Sub 22

... or with 4 bass drivers as Sub 42.

The Mivoc/Ravemaster Showsub is a reasonably priced solution if volume and power handling are important.

Substantially louder are horn loaded speakers that are integrated in the living room, incorporating the walls: Eckhorn 18. This speaker is able to play at an "infinitely high" volume, but lacks low bass.

Visaton also carries a wide range of home cinema systems: System 80   System 130   System 170   System 200   System VOX 253 HE   and as additional rear speaker: Fontana AL ... as well as Intertechnik ...

High volume

For this purpose speakers by Focal, Visaton or PA speakers are suitable (please visit our PA site: http://www.lautsprechershop.de/pa)

For example the K&T kit 4430-Klon is well suited as guitar speaker, for (really loud parties) or outdoor applications.

For volumes not quite as high but with quality matching valve amps: Purus.

... and as proper PA solution: the Visaton 208/H vocal speaker with fitting 115/B bass.

Extreme low-bass

Subwoofer
The best reproducer of bass is usually the active subwoofer, especially when the built-in amplifier has an influence on the subs low bass capabilities.

Real classics among the top performing subs are Visaton TTW subwoofers, e.g. the TIW 250 or Visaton Sub T25/50 the even more powerful Visaton Sub T30/60 with TIW-300 since this model combines low bass with high output - ideal for home cinema.

Low bass tuning

A new technology for low bass, small sized subwoofers in increasing size: Bass Exciter by Ralph Mantel, the IT Peerless Subs XA10 S and XA12 S.

Mr Timmermanns developed with the BassExciter - presented in Hobby HiFi June/July 2001 - an almost ideal subwoofer; this sub's cabinet is basically "dead", just the driver moves. The result is the Hexagon. Sub 12

Possibly the most interesting subwoofer at the moment - in case your space is restricted - is the jet black Sub 12, with an immensely powerful driver and an extraordinary low bass setting that captures everybody's heart (may be auditioned in our listening room). ...and should extremely low bass be combined with high power, two AC12 (with 8 Ohm) will be used:

Sub 12 The Sub 22/400 is available with either Hypex DS 4.0 with 400/700 Watt (continuous/programme); or with 300 Watt module as Sub 22/300 should less power be sufficient.

Even more powerful and recommended for room of 60 m2 and more is the Sub 42.

... or if you are looking for something less excessive but still with excellent sound: Alcone Sub 10, very affordable: Sub 10 asw or slightly bigger: Alcone Sub 20 or Alcone Sub 28 ... all great companions for satellite systems like Alcone Laplace or Dirac Satellite.

What's still missing: solutions with exceptionally accurate performance (with less bass, however). Good examples are BassExciter D4 or Vifa Quad Sub. both in closed cabinets. ... or even subwoofers to your specifications. You tell us what you want and we'll offer you a solution choosing from our database of 2.500 bass drivers.

PC loudspeakers / small home cinema

In case you are looking for a small speaker for your PC or small home cinema we suggest e.g. the Visaton VOX 80, a small speaker with features and benefits like a big 3 way, bass reflex speaker.
