The target for a new "Flatline" was quickly established: drivers by Seas or Peerless with an excellent price / performance ratio. The speaker should have an extremely low bass at the expense of efficiency. Due to the rather powerful drives of Peerless woofers a bass reflex cabinet was chosen instead of transmission line.
Klang+Ton test revealed that the following drivers were suitable: - Peerless HDS Exclusive 205 bass driver - and the long known hot tip Seas Noferro 900
Using these drivers Christian Gather designed a floorstanding speaker with the potential to become another best-seller.
Excerpt of the review by Klang+Ton 3/2007: ... "Despite the enormous low bass ability the tonal balance never suffered since the Peerless driver took its place. But, now and then the impression flashed up that there was something more powerful at work than with other speakers – something like an unobtrusive authority. Accordingly, the sound is rather soft than crisp and dry. But that's the domain of the low bass deficient competition. Above that, a well balanced midrange / high frequency develops reproducing male and female vocals without leaving its mark on it. Initially, the tops seem to be almost a bit too subdued – probably a sign that one got used to high frequency emphasis of most other speakers. But, after a short while one starts appreciating this well balance sound with highlights only where they belong. And when the tweeter comes into play it's with control and poise. Even though it might have clear before, I have to stress again that the Pharos is an excellent speaker for extended listening to all types of music material. The balance of a 2 way system, unobtrusive appearance, absolute neutrality and almost total coverage of the human hearing spectrum make this speaker something like a universal weapon for all occasions. But this implies that there needs to be a bit of power too. The Pharos can take quite a bit, but due to the long excursion of the Peerless woofer the sound might become somewhat mushy. In this regard some other speakers of the same size perform better, but then this is no surprise since those speaker often offer a much larger piston radiating area." ...
